About the Talk:

The tech talk will explore the fascinating convergence of mobile and wearable technologies, machine learning algorithms, and human-centred concerns within the Ubiquitous Computing domain. This convergence has opened up numerous industrial applications, from healthcare monitoring to workplace safety, remote assistance, and more. However, the enthusiastic adoption of machine learning in such technologies raises significant ethical dilemmas and biases.

Sofia Yfantidou’s talk will delve into original research spanning user interaction, data collection, and algorithmic equity. She will propose innovative solutions to mitigate alignment challenges, including a framework for designing and evaluating technologies for behaviour change interventions, open datasets for interdisciplinary research, and methodologies for fairness-aware computing.

By emphasizing the integration of technical advancements with human-centred values, Sofia advocates for a holistic approach to mobile and wearable computing. Her talk highlights the importance of aligning machine learning systems with societal needs and expectations.

About the Speaker:

Sofia Yfantidou is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow at the Innovative Training Network “Real-time Analytics for the Internet of Sports” (RAIS) and a Doctoral Candidate at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. She has previously worked with industry leaders such as Siemens Mobility and Nokia Bell Labs, focusing on mobile and wearable computing and human-centred machine learning. Sofia is known for her research on defining, quantifying, and mitigating biases in ubiquitous data and models for health and well-being.

A Heidelberg Laureate Forum alumna and a Grace Hopper scholar, Sofia holds a European Joint Master’s Degree in “Big Data Management and Analytics” from leading European universities.
